"vacation"

Honestly, why do I always do this to myself?
Why did I assume traveling alone with 2 kids, becoming a single parent for 2 weeks, would be fun, easy and a vacation?
Then there is Joe, home alone over in Texas.
My naive mind thought he's be totally missing us and realize how much he appreciates us as a family.
But to my astonishment, he's fine.
He is living the life.
He can do whatever he wants when he wants to do it: go to the gym, study, nap, sleep in.
And thus, the roles in my head have reversed.
Now, I write this with a bit of humor in it because it is just ironic. My family is great and helps alot but everyone, including me, have been swamped getting my sister's wedding ready for tomorrow. Then take in account the time it takes for the girls to adjust to this place...it makes for one hard vacation!
Bedtimes are the worst!
One night, I laid down with Emma for 1 hour and 1/2 and she still didn't fall asleep.
Last night, I just had to leave them and let them sleep themselves. I ran to the store. When I came back home, the light was on in the room...sweet.
I go up there and try to open the door. Emma is asleep on the floor next to the door. She's wedged between the door and my suitcase that she had moved next the a dresser to get some lotion from off the top of that. I squeeze myself through the door and assess the room:
clothes everywhere and Lotion was too.
I check on Kate, who wakes up quite easily but just looks up at me. I touch her to give her kisses and she's covered in lotion! Her hair is all gross and greasy and so is her face. So I had to quickly wipe as much as I could off of her. I picked up a bit, moved the suitcase back in it's place then scooped up Emma and put her in bed.
AHH! Emma Beth!
Honestly, she's going to be the end of me.
So I just find that Heaven Father has a funny sense of humor really. I'm trying to tell myself to just live it up, not to worry about the little meaningless things that go wrong because I don't see my family too often.
So in October, when my little brother gets married (they up-ed the wedding), Joe and I are only going, leaving my 2 sweeties in TX with Joe's mom...THANKS MARGIE!

You crack me up. I'm sitting here at work and just bust up laughing. Can't wait until I'm there someday. :-) Oh and thanks for the info with the socks. I'm going to have to try it. I remember seeing some on kate and thought they were so cute on her!

yep, that was me too in May! I was so excited to go to Chicago, but even more excited when I came back! I was sooo tired, and the "vacation" was not really, a vacation. Steve, was loving the life here! BTW when you get back we should plan a girls weekend. Where the guys are in charge of the kiddos the whole time! Celest wants to take a vacation, and her father in law told Jon they could rent us a condo in Vegas!!! I know this is crazy, but 3 days in Vegas alone, just the girls would be AWESOME!

Yes to the above comment, you come to Vegas and then I could go play with you girls! Sounds fun to me! So I have done the same thing you are talking about in your post, but only once or twice.

Oh boy, can I relate! I too felt it was way more work to be at my family's house in Utah by myself with the two boys.

Crazy Emma! I can't believe she put lotion all over Kate.

Don't be fooled! Vacations with kids are not fun! We've learned the hard way. :(

How does the phrase go? "I need a vacation to recover from my vacation". Yeah, that's us after every trip with the kids. It's exhausting.

Oh yes. I too have learned the hard way that moms don't get vacation if they have to bring their work with them! It's actually harder when we take them out of their element and change time zones on them. We were glad when we went to Belgium that we stayed for 3 weeks. That was the only way the torture of getting there was worth it.

Oh good heck Lyssa!! THOSE are the moments that most husbands don't "get" because they are gone all day and then they wonder "why you so crabby?" Craig is good about just letting me have my "moments" and has witnessed events like these on occassion but for us moms who are stay-at-homes, it's draining at times!!! It just never seems to end. And what are you to do? Either way, it still needs to be cleaned up right? Being a mom is by far the hardest thing I have EVER done. And then throwing in a the word "vacation" with it makes it even harder! Glad you have a positive attitude about it because I know I wouldn't!

They're called trips, not vacations if kids are involved. I totally know what you mean. Except it was the opposite. I sent Aaron with the kids and I got the vacation, but Aaron was all "it was easy". Of course he was at his parents house with their help and his brother's. I would just like to see him do all that alone, and cook and clean at the same time with no free babysitting.

Oh my word! Your girls sound so full of life! Been there done that...a few times myself in my lifetime! Years from now, this will be something to laugh about as their kids do the SAME thing!
Thanks for stopping by my blog. Come back soon!
And can't wait to hear about the wedding!

I agree with Emily-I have to take a vacation after a vacation to get caught up. Hope the wedding went well and glad you'll be back in a couple days!
